The Monotype type designer Carl Crossgrove designs the Burlingame typeface in 2013.The family consists of nine weights in two widths, all with Italics. Monotype spearheadedresearch into the safety and legibility of automotive displays. The results favored typefaceswith open aperture, looser spacing, simple shapes and large x-heights. While searching fortypefaces in the Monotype library that satisfied these criteria, very few existing designsmeasured up. Burlingame, and incomplete design originally offered to game developers, was used as a starting point for a family tailored to these high-performance conditions. The open, clear shapes worked initially, and the design was further customized by increasingx-height, loosening spacing, and cutting weight out of corners, to increase clarity. In twowidths and nine fine weight grades, the design is now adapted to a wider range of applications.Burlingame still suits low-res and small-size settings, but can also perform at multimediapublishing, branding, advertising, product packaging, and game and motion graphics.
