Poster fonts of films currently showing in the cinema




The barbecue season has long since ended and going to the cinema in the evening is a much more attractive prospect than sitting on the cold balcony. Perhaps you not only enjoy watching the film, but also take an interest in the typography on the film poster. In that case, we would like to assist you. Even if the typography used is often very individual, again and again you find fonts resembling the captions in Monotype. We have reviewed and researched the posters for films currently showing at the cinema, to find out which font seems similar to the font used.

00 Schneider

With his own idiosyncratic humour, Helge Schneider once more plays Detective Superintendent 00 Schneider, who solves "cases" in his neighbourhood.
Most of the text on the poster is set in a font similar to the ITC Franklin Gothic. The Franklin Gothic, designed at the beginning of the 20th century, is considered one of the forefathers of sans serif fonts. ITC Franklin Gothic was re-designed by Victor Caruso in the 1980s based on old printed materials.
To the present day the font has remained very popular, especially because of its restrained character and its high recognition value.
On the 00 Schneider poster an interesting contrast is created between the clear, neutral letters of the headlines and the handwritten commentaries.

2Guns

The action thriller tells the tale of two undercover agents, who have to work together against their wish. After both of them have been abandoned by their superiors, they have to rely on one another in a struggle for survival.
ust like the two protagonists, the headline stands as solid as a rock in a gale. The strong typo is similar to the Helvetica Black Extended.
Designed by Max Miedinger in the 1950s, the Helvetica has, to the present day, remained one of the most popular fonts. Thanks to its impression of neutrality, it is suitable for almost every purpose. The letters on the poster are slightly modified and given a craggy structure.

Der Geschmack von Apfelkernen

„Der Geschmack von Apfelkernen“ is a moving family drama about several generations of women.
On the poster a font similar to the Trajan Bold is used for the title. The Trajan majuscule script from Carol Twombly is influenced by Roman inscriptions dating from the 1st century and its classic, yet warm character makes it captivating.

Gravity

After an accident the two astronauts, Kowalski and Stone, are travelling in orbit. Since the destruction of the space shuttle has also wrecked their chances of returning home, they are both desperately seeking a means of survival and a way of returning to Earth.
The poster for the film is set with a font similar to the Futura from Paul Renner. The structured sans serif Futura is designed in the Bauhaus style. Its condensed letters with their characteristic large ascender have a timelessly modern, very clear and rather austere effect. Nonetheless, Futura is sufficiently neutral to be used for a wide variety of purposes.

Prisoners

A font similar to Bauer Bodoni with a modified ’O’ is used. The addition of a labyrinth turns the circle-shaped letter into a central symbol of the film.

Rush

Rush tells the life story of the racing driver, Nikki Lauder, with particular emphasis on his competition with the driver James Hunt.
The poster is set completely in uppercase letters and uses a font similar to the Basic Commercial. Created at the end of the 19th century, the Basic Commercial is one of the first really successful sans serif fonts and is considered a milestone in font history. Its neutral, characteristic appearance has secured it a firm place among the most popular fonts right up to the present day.

Spieltrieb

The highly gifted loner, Ada, seems at last to have found a soul mate in her new classmate, Alev. But Alev uses Ada for a perfidious game of sex and power.
A font similar to the Futura is used for the typography on the poster. In contrast to “Gravity”, for which a very slender font is used, this poster uses a bold font.
The character of the Futura, designed by Paul Renner, seems at first glance neutral and fits perfectly here with the theme of the film. It is only when you look closer that you spot the cool, even perhaps somewhat austere impression given by this font.

The World’s End

In this action drama, five adults, who had been friends in their youth, undertake a pub crawl, begun in their youth and never completed, and in the process meet extra-terrestrial robots.
The designer has used a font similar to the Adobe Garamond for the film title. Adobe Garamond was designed by Robert Slimbach from old models and radiates a classic, slightly historical flair. This character is used on the film poster to create a mystical fantasy atmosphere.

The Internship

In the drama two salesmen, who have lost their jobs after a company has closed down, prove their worth as interns with the Internet company, Google.
A font similar to the Frutiger Ultra Black is used for the film title.
The humanist Frutiger sans serif is one of the best known fonts from Adrian Frutiger. The very neutral, yet warm and friendly font scarcely makes itself obvious, as here on the film poster. Nevertheless its individual, unmistakable character makes it impressive.

White House Down

John Cale, a police officer, applies without success for a post in the White House and is therefore on the spot by chance, when the White House is attacked by terrorists. This gives him the opportunity to prove his capability.
The poster for the film is designed with a font similar to the Eurostile. The forms of the Eurostile, designed by Aldo Novarese and based on the rectangle, show a slight technical, yet also dynamic character. Its solid, robust nature makes it the perfect font for this film poster.
