Dadaism

Hugo Ball and his wife Emmy Hennings founded the ’Cabaret Voltaire’ in Zurich in February 1916. This location provided a platform for artists like Jacno Hülsenbeck, Tristan Tzara and Hans Arp. Writers took the stage in outlandish costumes to present poems and musical works made the bourgeois ear cringe. Soon the first exhibitions appeared in the ’Dada Gallery’. Building on previous new styles like Marcel Duchamp’s Ready Mades (1913) and early Italian futurism, Dada refused to call itself art.
