Mantika News: a strong Antiqua complements the super family

Jürgen Weltin has added another Antiqua, Mantika™ News, to his Mantika super family, which includes Mantika Sans, Mantika Informal and Mantika Book.
The fourth member of the large clan is also very legible in the smaller font sizes. Its strong serifs make it ideal for concise informational texts, for example, or technical manuals and editorial design.
The Mantika super family now has four members: the humanist Mantika™ Sans with its dynamic italic, the organic and lively Mantika™ Informal, the low-key and friendly Renaissance Antiqua Mantika™ Book and the new, vigorous Mantika News.

Mantika News
Like all members of the super family, the basic form of Mantika News is derived from the French Renaissance Antiqua. Strong, nearly symmetrical and slightly wedge-shaped serifs and a slight contrast in stroke width lend the font a solid appearance. Clear letterforms that are free of ornamentation reinforce this impression. Compared to Mantika Book, the other Antiqua in the super family, the large x-height in Mantika News stands out; it makes this font legible in smaller font sizes.

Mantika News

Mantika News is available in four weights. The two middle weights, Regular and Bold, are intended as text fonts. The extreme weights, Light and Extra Bold, were designed as display fonts. For optimum results, Weltin has not only changed the stroke width for the Display fonts, but also adapted the x-height and ascenders carefully. The reduced x-height in the Light Display version emphasizes the slender, elegant character of the font. The ascenders in the Extra Bold Display version, restricted to the size of the capital letters, makes for a compact appearance in headlines.

Weltin designed a very typical Mantika italic for the Regular and Bold styles, with a very slight tilt. This and dynamic changes in shape only serve to attract more attention. Apart from that, the lower-case “a” changes to a closed shape and the “f” has a descender.

The character selection of Mantika News is exemplary. All styles have various number sets with capital letters and old-style figures, as well as numerous ligatures and even Greek and Cyrillic characters. Last but not least, some geometric shapes and various arrows are included.

The new Mantika News not only expands the flexibility and application potential of the Mantika super family, it is also a great font on its own. The restrained, strong and neutral characters work both in body text as well as headlines. The carefully designed italic styles let you add that special touch.
