Based on lettering found on antique tobacco tins, Jim Ford's Hideout is a flared serif with plenty of swagger. “I describe it as a little bit Victorian, but it's Victorian futuristic,” says Ford. “I like to think of it as kind of a steampunk design.”
Its angled letterforms are instant eye-catchers, but look closer and more delicate details can be picked out such as the sharp nick in the R and K, and the Art Deco-esque bar of the design's alternate A. This satisfyingly chunky design comes in 14 weights, from light to black, and demands to be used at large sizes – on packaging, posters, restaurant menus, editorial, book covers, and even in video games.
