1. I am using a foreign language font. How do I find out which characters are mapped to which keys?
Mac
The Mac operating systems have a menu option which can display on your screen the function of every key on the keyboard. The option is called ‘Key Caps’ and is found in the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
Windows
Windows has no option similar to that of the Mac. To see your keyboard layout you need to use a text program and try out every key combination to see the results. You can also use the option ‘Character Table’ to see all possible characters and to see which key combination produces which character.
2. How do I install and activate a keyboard driver on my Mac?
In Mac OS 9.x, the Keyboard Driver must be installed from the System CD, and then activated with the Control Panels. In Mac OS X, the Keyboard Drivers are automatically installed. They may be also activated via the Control Panels.
3. Can I transfer a Quark document with foreign language fonts between PC and Mac and vice versa?
Yes, but the text will usually be distorted. This is due to differences in font encoding and font formats as well as to static import filters. To get around this problem, you can use an ASCII text converter or similar tool.
4. Some characters of a font are not displayed in the glyph table on Linotype.com. What’s going on here?
The character set on Lintotype.com only shows Unicode-coded characters. Some characters are designed as OT features that are not coded or encrypted; this is the reason why the characters are not displayed in our character set. We are currently working on a new version that can display the non-coded characters.
5. How do I switch between the different languages in MacOS 10?
Please go to your system settings and click on “Language & Region”. Go to “System Settings Keyboard” and click in the lower area on “Display Entry Sources in the Menu Bar”. Now your monitor displays a small flag in the right corner. Open Word and select a font. Then click on the flag and select “Open System Settings Keyboard”. There, use the plus sign to select the languages that you want activated for your menu – Greek, for example. Next, close the window. Now when you click on the flag again, it displays Greek as an option. Select the language and then return to your Word program. Make sure that the font is still selected and start typing. Your MacOS will now use the Greek keyboard and displays Greek letters, as long as your font has a Greek character set.
