The New Linotype Syntax

... and this was the most work of all. Hans Eduard Meier was involved in the complete and consistent reworking of every figure in Syntax™.
A new criterium for every upright weight is a slight incline towards the right, emphasizing the written character of the alphabet. The old Syntax™ itself rejected a strict vertical, but this was not consistently translated. Now every vertical form element has a 0.5 degree incline. In addition, every curved form tapers subtly between the bottom left and the top right. In the normal "a" and "e", a new, dynamic contour guide was applied in addition to the taper. The unbelievable amount of detail work also shows itself in the German double s "ß", which now has a much gentler sweep in the S-curve. The dots have become more subdued, which makes the German umlaut accents look especially good. The loop of the g reaches well-below the baseline, creating an elongated and elegant look.

An important attribute of the current demands on a typeface is the radical reworking of the @ sign. The Syntax @ is based on the upright roman "a" of the basic weight. The center corresponds exactly in size and position with the normal "a", so that symbol’s arc stretches elegantly to the caps height and then dives far below the baseline. This makes the new Linotype Syntax™ the first typeface with which you can set an e-mail address easily without having to spend time correcting the character size and baseline shift just to make the type look half-way decent.

The reworking of the lower case alphabet with many small changes led to a modern, communicative typeface, even though the changes in the capitals were more radical. Characters such as the upper-case "K", "M", and "R" are now noticeably closer to Roman inscriptions.
