The New Linotype Syntax

A universal applicability that does justice to the new requirements of graphic design – this was Linotype’s goal in publishing the new Linotype Syntax™. Therefore, it was a must to expand the typeface to include small capitals and old-style figures in all weights. So now, instead of containing four upright and one italic weights, the typeface contains six separate weights, each with its respective italic. The italics were reduced in their stroke weight and width with respect to the upright sets and designed with narrower proportions. The new small capitals for the three light weights include something unusual: matching numerals that line up with the x-height. Based upon the normal weight, the new Linotype Syntax™ was expanded to include a lighter version, Syntax™ light. Between the normal and the semibold there is now a further weight, Syntax™ medium. The bold version, in comparison with the older weight, now possesses altered diagonal figures. Even the ultrabold set of the family underwent a complete reworking. The old-style figures of all six basic weights and the italics are now in the OsF-Fonts.
