The sinuous brush scripts Thirsty Script and Thirsty Script Rough by Ryan Martinson ingeniously combine the influences of several styles and are described by their creator as a genial mixture of retro script, modern sans serif and a shot of caffeine.
The character of Thirsty Script is determined by the dynamic letters of this meticulously designed calligraphic font. The letters with their undemonstrative decorative finials are suggestive of old hand-painted signs and advertising texts of the 1950s and 1960s.
A very generous x-height and the linking of letters with each other provide text set in Thirsty Script with a compact appearance. Discretely bevelled line terminals and a contrast that grows with increasing stroke thickness give the font additional vibrancy.
The provision of alternative glyphs ensures that there is always sufficient versatility. There are minor differences to be found, for example, in the alternative versions of the 'n' and the 'm', both of which have a horizontal rather than diagonal terminal outstroke, while there are more marked disparities in the case of the 'o' and the 'v', which are connected to the following letter with an additional curlicue. Numerous ligatures, oldstyle and lining figures round off the range of characters.
For all six weights of Thirsty Script, there are variants with which the text can be duplicated in the form of a hard shadow line. This shadow line can be coloured to taste in this second text layer and its alignment can be readily adjusted, so that it is possible to create not just a standard hard shadow line, but also one that is slightly offset to the actual letters - an effect that again emphasizes the retro nature of Thirsty Script.
Martinson's Thirsty Script Rough is a modified version of his Thirsty Script. Its letters simulate the effect of irregular printing, so that they are not overly dominated by opaque colouring and look as if they have been stamped. Thirsty Script Rough is available in four weights, each with three variants of colour texture. And Martinson has, of course, remembered to add a corresponding shadowed version of each weight.
But that's not all. Also supplied free of charge is a version with various textures and patches; Thirsty Script Rough Textures. This enhances the design potential of the font, while it is also possible to embellish a text using the numerous symbols provided.
The extensive and highly versatile fonts Thirsty Script and Thirsty Script Rough are at home in many different contexts, such as headlines, logos and even short text passages. Thanks to the attractive blend of different styles, the retro feel of the fonts has been enhanced by means of a very modern touch and they have a certain something that gives them considerable individuality and a high recognisability factor. The alternative characters and the very adaptable text shadow concept will make any project for which Thirsty Script is used into an eye-catching experience.
