For long time, san-serif latin typefaces in Japan had been only grotesque styles such as Helvetica. It was Frutiger typefaces that I saw at the station. Frutiger was (has been) used for displaying track numbers. It was different from the typefaces I had ever seen. I found that the name of the typefeces is Frutiger later and that it had been designed for sign system. I learned that typefaces should carefully be choiced dependent on their usage. Now I am not a designer. But, I am aware of typefeces in order to communicate with others better. I think typefaces is similar to air. Air is indispensable for us, but we can live without being aware of it. But, good air makes us comfortable. Typefaces is indispensable for our communication, but we can live without being aware of them. But, good typefeces and good typography make us comfortable.
