Ever since I set Monotype Univers at school I have always used that as my benchmark for sans-serif typefaces. Most of my work is now done digitally but having just bought an old Adana letterpress machine (and some typefaces including Univers 10pt Bold) I look forward to getting reacquainted with it. I was a student in engineering when I visited a friends portfolio review. She was graduating in Visual Communications. She so inspired me, and it was her passion for Frutiger, the font she used on her resume that still sticks with me today. I use that font often because of that moment. For long time, san-serif latin typefaces in Japan had been only grotesque styles such as Helvetica. It was Frutiger typefaces that I saw at the station. Frutiger was (has been) used for displaying track numbers. It was different from the typefaces I had ever seen. I found that the name of the typefeces is Frutiger later and that it had been designed for sign system. I learned that typefaces should carefully be choiced dependent on their usage. Now I am not a designer. But, I am aware of typefeces in order to communicate with others better. I think typefaces is similar to air. Air is indispensable for us, but we can live without being aware of it. But, good air makes us comfortable. Typefaces is indispensable for our communication, but we can live without being aware of them. But, good typefeces and good typography make us comfortable.
