Comme son nom l’indique, Linotype Syntax™ Serif est une extension de la célèbre famille de caractères Syntax de Hans Eduard Meier. Le concept initial à l’origine de Syntax consistait à créer une fonte qui associe la grâce d’une romane de la Renaissance avec la structure d’une sans serif. The concept behind the origin of Syntax™ was to develop a typeface that merged the grace of a Renaissance roman with the structural characteristics of a grotesque. The Swiss typographer Hans Eduard Meier drew the first designs for the typeface in 1954; 15 years later Syntax™ Roman appeared from the typefoundry D. Stempel AG in three weights: light, semibold, and extra bold.
