ITC Golden Type® est une interprétation d'une fonte créée à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle par William Morris qui s'est illustré en tant que typographe, poète, artiste, artisan, réformateur social et imprimeur sous l'ère victorienne. Au cours de sa recherche d'un caractère solide et pur qu'il pourrait utiliser pour ses éditions privées, il a été inspiré par les caractères romains des livres imprimés par Nicolas Jenson au quinzième siècle. La caractère qu'il a dessiné, appelé Golden Type, est bien plus épais que le caractère romain de Jenson. Il a correspondu au besoin et au souhait de Morris d'avoir des caractères robustes qui conviendraient aux illustrations et aux cadres magnifiques des éditions de sa société, la Kelmscott Press. Le caractère a été gravé par Edward Prince. Il tient son nom du premier livre pour lequel Morris l'a utilisé, le guide médiéval intitulé The Golden Legend. Dans les années 1980, trois graphistes d'URW en Allemagne ont entrepris par passion de numériser Golden Type et de le développer pour en faire une fonte correspondant aux besoins actuels. ITC Golden Type a été publiée en 1989 en plusieurs graisses (normal, gras et extra gras), contenant des petites capitales et des caractères supplémentaires. Il est conseillé de l'utiliser en grandes tailles, avec un espacement généreux. ITC Golden Type exprime toute la solidité et le dynamisme voulus par Morris.
