John Baskerville – born 28. 1. 1706 in Wolverley, Worcestershire, England, died 8. 1. 1775 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England – type designer, writing master, printer.

The designer John Quaranda created ITC New Baskerville®, a revival typeface based on Baskerville. Baskerville was developed in the 18th century by John Baskerville (1706–1775) and its clear, sharp image set it apart from others of its time. Originally released in only two versions, roman and italic, Baskerville has remained one of the world's most widely used typefaces.
ITC New Baskerville is available in roman, semi bold, bold and black weights, each with a corresponding italic.
Matthew Carter – born 1. 10. 1937 in London, England – type designer.
1956: trains as a punch cutter in the Netherlands. 1963–65: typography consultant for Crossfield Electronics. 1965: moves to the USA and works for Mergenthaler-Linotype in New York. 1971: moves back to England where he continues to work for Linotype. 1980–84: typography consultant to Her Majesty’s Stationery Office. 1981: the Royal Society of Arts make him a Royal Designer for Industry. 1981: he and Mike Parker set up [...]

Mergenthaler Linotype, in the United States, was founded in Brooklyn, but later moved to Melville, NY, and then to Hauppauge, NY. Mergenthaler Linotype's design studio employed at varying times up to 80 designers under the direction of Chauncey H. Griffith, Jackson Burke, Mike Parker, and Matthew Carter.
In continental Europe, Linotype typefaces were produced by the D. Stempel AG typefoundry in Frankfurt, Germany. [...]

La ITC New Baskerville® famille de polices appartient à la bibliothèque ITC Collection.
John Baskerville (1706-1775) était expert en écriture et imprimeur à Birmingham en Angleterre. Il a conçu plusieurs fontes, dont les poinçons créés par John Handy ont servi de base aux fontes aujourd'hui intitulées Baskerville. L'excellente qualité de ses impressions a inspiré des imprimeurs célèbres tels que Didot en France et Bodoni en Italie. Malgré sa renommée internationale dans les domaines de l'innovation technique et stylistique, il a difficilement pu concurrencer les imprimeurs commerciaux locaux en raison de ses critères élevés quant à la qualité de l'encre et du papier. Cependant, ses contemporains anglais ont imité ses fontes et, en 1768, Isaac Moore a créé des poinçons afin de fournir une version de la fonte Baskerville à la fonderie Fry. Baskerville a imprimé une magnifique bible in-folio pour l'Université de Cambridge. De nos jours, ses fontes sont considérées comme des représentations raffinées du rationalisme et du néoclassicisme du dix-huitième siècle. Lisible et très élégante, Baskerville est une excellente police de texte. Grâce à ses formes nettes et fortement contrastées, elle convient également aux publicités élégantes.La collection Linotype contient de nombreuses versions de cette fonte:
ITC New Baskerville® fut créée par Matthew Carter et John Quaranda en 1978.
Baskerville Cyrillic fut conçue par Linotype Design Studio.
Baskerville Greek fut conçue, quant à elle, par Matthew Carter en 1978 et
Baskerville™ Classico par Franko Luin en 1995.
