Morris Fuller Benton – born 30. 11. 1872 in Milwaukee, USA, died 30. 6. 1948 in Morristown, USA – engineer, type designer.
After training as a mechanic and engineer, Benton jointed the ATF, where he became type designer and in-house designer with ATF.

David Berlow’s career in type has been a continual mix of the traditional and cutting edge. He entered the world of type design in 1978 as a letter designer for the Mergenthaler Linotype type foundry one of the oldest, still operating type foundries. After working for Linotype for four years, he was then one of the first employees of the newly formed digital type supplier, Bitstream, Inc. Berlow left Bitstream in 1989, to found his own company, The Font Bureau, with Roger Black.

Franklin Gothic a été créée par Morris Fuller Benton pour American Type Founders entre 1903 et 1912. Il existait déjà de nombreuses polices gothiques aux États-Unis au début des années 1900, mais Benton a probablement été influencé par les polices grotesk allemandes les plus populaires :
Basic Commercial et Reform de D. Stempel AG. Les premières polices sans empattement étaient connues sous le nom impropre « gothic ». aux États-Unis (« grotesque » en Angleterre et « grotesk » en Allemagne). Le nom provient peut-être de Benjamin Franklin mais la conception semble n'avoir aucun lien avec le célèbre imprimeur et homme d'état américain. Les aspects les plus reconnaissables de Franklin Gothic incluent les lettres a et g à deux niveaux, les contrastes très subtils entre les traits et le rétrécissement des traits arrondis à mesure qu'ils se transforment en fûts. Cette famille est d'apparence sombre et monotone, ce qui lui donne une apparence moderne et robuste. Franklin Gothic est encore l'une des familles de polices sans empattement les plus utilisées. ITC Franklin Gothic® est un vaste ensemble de polices basées sur les travaux de Benton et conçues grâce au savoir-faire de deux créateurs talentueux. En 1980, Victor Caruso a redessiné la Franklin Gothic d'origine et a conçu plusieurs graisses supplémentaires. En 1991, David Berlow a rajouté plusieurs graisses étroites et compressées.
