David Siegel in Palo Alto had the original idea of using the calligraphic work of Hermann Zapf created in 1944 as the basis for a calligraphic script in order to try out a new type of system for typesetting on the PC. Zapf himself was unable to achieve such an authentic script himself given the technical restrictions of hot metal composition. It nevertheless remained his dream for many years.

Zapfino Extra est une fonte au format OpenType disponible en deux versions. La version Contextual contient une mine d'éléments contextuels supplémentaires. Zapfino™ Extra contient une profusion de nouveaux caractères. Elle inclut des fioritures exubérantes, d'élégantes petites capitales, des dizaines d'ornements, des versions alternatives
et des ligatures supplémentaires, des caractères d'index, ainsi qu'une version à graisse épaisse, Zapfino™ Forte.
