Nicolaus Jenson – born 1420 in Sommevoire, France, died 1480 in Venice, Italy – type founder, punch cutter, printer, publisher. It is thought Jenson was punch cutter (master of the mint) for the royal mint in Tours or Paris. 1458: Carl VII sends Jenson to Mainz to learn the technique of movable metal type and bring it back to Paris. The contemporary New York letter and type designer Tony Stan was born 1917 and died 1988. He created the following fonts: ITC American Typewriter® (1974, with Joel Kaden), ITC Garamond® (1977), ITC Cheltenham® (1978), ITC Century® (1980), ITC Berkeley Old Style® (1983). ITC American Typewriter, ITC Garamond, ITC Cheltenham, ITC Century and ITC Berkely Old Style are included in the Linotype Library.

ITC Berkeley Old Style® est basée sur la fonte University of California Old Style créée par Frederic W. Goudy en 1938. Il s'agissait d'une fonte d'édition privée destinée à la maison d'édition de cette université. En 1958, environ 10 ans après la mort de Goudy, Monotype a publié à nouveau cette fonte sous le nom Californian. Elle a alors connu un grand succès dans le domaine de la typographie d'édition. Goudy lui-même a déclaré avoir dessiné cette fonte dans le but d'obtenir la meilleure lisibilité possible. En effet, elle ne contient pas les exubérances qui caractérisent ses autres fontes. Tony Stan a redessiné cette famille pour ITC en 1983 et l'a renommée ITC Berkeley Old Style, en référence à la ville de Berkeley où se situe la maison d'édition University of California Press. Stan a dessiné méticuleusement huit versions y compris des italiques. ITC Berkeley Old Style® constitue un bel hommage à une fonte prestigieuse. Elle convient très bien aux livres, aux magazines et à l'affichage publicitaire.
