The repetition of simple geometric shapes forms a daily part of our environment. Throughout the 20th century – and into the 21st – typefaces whose designs have taken advantage of this have remained popular. But finding exactly the right mood can be tricky. For your convenience, we have grouped some of our favorite geometric typefaces (mostly sans serif and symbol) into four categories: circles, squares, ovals, and triangles.

ITC Avant Garde Gothic® a été conçue par Herb Lubalin et Tom Carnase en 1970. Cette police se fonde sur le logo de Lubalin qui figure sur le magazine Avant Garde : un bloc compact de lettres majuscules d'apparence géométrique qui se chevauchent pour former une structure fascinante. ITC Avant Garde est une police géométrique sans empattement, composée principalement de cercles et de lignes droites, qui n'est pas sans rappeler les travaux de création issus du mouvement Bahaus en Allemagne, dans les années 1920. Les premières versions d'ITC Avant Garde, avec leurs variantes et ligatures si particulières, sont devenues célèbres et rappellent toujours la typographie des années 1970. Ces polices contiennent l'alphabet de base (sans les anciennes ligatures habituelles qui ont fait leur originalité). D'apparence toujours solide et moderne, ITC Avant Garde est devenue un classique dans la collection des créateurs d'aujourd'hui. Les contre-poinçons, largement ouverts, et la hauteur médiane élevée donnent un aspect sympathique. Cette famille de polices convient bien aux textes courts et aux titres. Les graisses étroites ont été dessinées par Ed Benguiat en 1974 et les obliques conçues par André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind et Christian Mengelt en 1977. ITC Avant Garde® Mono est une version à chasse fixe créée par Ned Bunnel en 1983.
