In March and April, winter comes to an end and springtime begins; it’s the time of year to celebrate! Linotype.com has just added a page full of font suggestions for Easter, and if you are searching for the proper font for your Sunday brunch invitation, look no further! Just a few weeks before Easter is another fine holiday – St. Patrick’s Day. Since uncial typefaces are most commonly associated with Ireland, we’ve brought out an emerald of our crop for this month’s newsletter: Sweeney™. Spring and time for celebration – An Easter font selection

The change of seasons brings a breath of fresh air into our daily routine. It is time to open the windows and let the sun in! Invite your neighbors over for tea, or if the weather is right, a BBQ! Calligraphic uncials aren’t just for St. Patrick’s Day – Sweeney

Sweeney captures the verve and energy of broad pen calligraphy in a digital font. An italic uncial with strong Celtic overtones, Sweeney maintains the conventions of medieval Celtic manuscript writing, making no distinction between caps and lowercase letters. Several swash and alternative characters and a suite of Roman numerals are included in the OpenType character set. There is even a “lino cut” companion font! In keeping with the Irish theme of the uncial forms, several border segments based upon Celtic knot-work are also included. Named after an ancient Irish king, Sweeney is the perfect fit for Irish festivals, whether they fall on St. Patrick’s Day or not. But the inherent beauty of the letterforms invites a broad number of possibilities. This is an excellent choice for celebrations year round.

Linotype rolls out its fourth TypoTechnica

An experimental genius – W.A. Dwiggins Font Feature

By the late 1920s, William Addison Dwiggins had already built a solid reputation as an advertising artist, book designer, and illustrator. But he was never one to rest on his laurels. Concerned with the future of American typography, he virtually began a second career, working with Mergenthaler Linotype in New York to develop new typefaces. Many of these are still popular today, several decades after their release. W. A. Dwiggins is fascinating for this and many other reasons – not to mention his hobby as a puppeteer!
