The legend continues – Linotype Matrix Vol. 4, Issue 2
The latest issue of the Linotype Matrix is packed with 64-pages of richly illustrated and thoroughly investigated articles, exciting and informative typography topics, as well as tips and tricks for ambitious designers. Our second release since the publication’s revival in fall 2005, this issue revolves around history, including a ten-page feature on the life and work of William Addison Dwiggins. Topics such as ultra thin fonts, script styles, blackletter specimens, the French Deberny & Peignot foundry, and type systems are covered as well.

Dirty brilliance – The brush script “Bronx™” from David Quay
Bronx™ is a contemporary, highly stylized script typeface that captures the effect of quickly rendered brush lettering. The capitals are intended only for initialing purposes but may be joined with the lowercase letters, which can be linked together to reproduce the look of handwriting. This design has great potential for use in work associated with the fashion industry. British designer David Quay originally produced Bronx™ for Letraset in 1986, and it is just one of the many styles of type developed by this talented and renowned designer. Stylus meets sans serif; classicism reinterpreted – The Veronika™ family
Veronika Grüger began designing her eponymous semi serif text family by writing out letterforms with a wooden stylus. These sketches evolved into a new typeface, which had uniform stroke widths but still maintained some aspects of calligraphy. Semi serif? Because Veronika’s terminals are round and bulbous, the font can’t really be classified as a typical serif or sans serif font. Its old-style proportions remind one of the Renaissance and allow it to function very well in text at small sizes, where the reading flow is aided by a dynamic, movement-like quality that stems from the means by which it was initially written out! When set large in headlines, logos or other elements, Veronika’s special qualities, like its weight distribution and stroke characteristics, will become even more noticeable.

Inch, acute, or apostrophe? “Akira says” returns for June
The “Akira says” feature in last month’s LinoLetter was one of our readers’ favorite. Linotype’s Type Director Akira Kobayashi is back once again offering another typographic tip. This month, he describes the proper use of the pesky punctuation mark that signifies omission and forms the possessive (and sometimes plurals).
