Bomm) "For the 3rd Type Design Contest in 1999, with the year 2000 just around the corner, I began wondering what the lettering would look like on an intergalactic space ship and had the idea of using this to express the futuristic implications of this ominous number. So I sketched some circle segments and tried to reduce the various forms of the alphabet without compromising their legibility." 
"I set the upper-case height at the x-height of the lower-case letters so that, when they are mixed, a standardized line of type can be produced without ascenders or descenders. Eventually, two basic forms appeared – one with a pointed, quite aggressive character and the other with rounded, softened forms. It was obvious that they had to be named after the God of War and the Goddess of Love – Mars and Venus."

About the FontHellmut G. Bomm, 1999A display font of the TakeType No. 3.1. Linotype Scott Venus, from German designer Hellmut G. Bomm, is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the Take Type 3 CD. This display font is a relative of Linotype Scott Mars, however Bomm took a slightly more abstract approach in this design. Fully rounded curves are almost fully lacking in the lower case letters, emphasizing the font’s extremely cool and technical characters. Hellmut G. Bomm constructed Linotype Mars from a consciously limited repertoire of forms, producing a strictly constructed font with a cool, technical look. Worthy of note are also the exalted numeral forms and the unusual size relation of the lower case and capital letters. Scott Venus and Scott Mars are best used for headlines and short to middle length texts in point sizes of 10 or larger.
