Whether Garamond, Baskerville or Bodoni, many of the typefaces produced during the 20th century were revivals of centuries-old models. Not so of Palatino: Hermann Zapf´s new design is an interpretation of our own time.
Designed between 1948 and 1950, Palatino was first released as in lead type form by the German typefoundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, and quickly became one of the world´s most popular typefaces. Palatino was thereafter altered for use on the Linotype machine and in photo-type [...]

Palatino Sans shows in its alphabets an interpretation of a type different from all the traditional sans serif faces of monotone strokes that are done with a ruler. Notice how the letters of Palatino Sans have elegant curved outlines, not as uniform and without sharp edges, to convey a more soft expression. The details of the stems can be seen especially in large sizes. Typical for all the Palatino alphabets are the open letter ‘P’, and the curved lower-case ‘l’ for a [...]

For more than half a century, Professor Hermann Zapf has been designing typefaces that have helped define how our world communicates. Now we are pleased to present his newest series of families, Palatino™ Sans and Palatino Sans Informal. An extension of the Palatino idea, which was first made manifest in 1950, these groundbreaking sans serif typefaces offer another interpretation of the sans serif genre. Whether set alone or used in combination with each other or the Palatino, Palatino [...]
The Palatino alphabet was designed after many careful studies together with the punchcutter August Rosenberger. Even such small details as the serifs were carefully scrutinized. In 1948 tests in offset printing were made, especially in connection with the weight of the serifs. You see how important such serifs are.
The type Palatino is named after the Italian writing master of the 16th century Giambattista Palatino. I hope he will forgive me once a day in heaven and give me his blessing in [...]

Palatino undressed – Sans and Sans Informal
Bad Homburg, 26 January, 2007. Palatino Sans recasts the mold. Migrating his classic typeface from a serif to sans, Hermann Zapf makes an epochal leap. He not only transforms the traditional letters of the famous Palatino™ typeface into the grotesque, but does it with a warmth that transcends the usual cool associations with a sans serif typeface. This synthesis of modern and classic styles leaves room for a bright openness, so the type strides [...]

Font Designer: Hermann Zapf, 1986
Palatino® is the work of Hermann Zapf and became available in the late 1950s from D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main. Zapf named the font after Giambattista Palatino, a master of scripts from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Zapf optimized Palatino's design for legibility, producing a typeface which remained legible even on the inferior paper of the post-World War II period. Palatino is an Old Face font which proves that classic forms can still be used [...]
Font Designer: Hermann Zapf, 1954
Aldus® was designed by Hermann Zapf and appeared with the font foundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main in 1954. Zapf named this font after the famous Venecian printer Aldus Manutius, whose work is among the most important of the Renaissance period as well as Zapf's inspiration for Aldus. Linotype Aldus was introduced by Linotype as a text font lighter than Palatino®. Zapf's goal with his Palatino and Aldus was to create a new form of Old Face [...]

Giovanbattista Palatino, after whom the Palatino typefaces are named, was a writing master of the 16th century in Rome. His work inspired Hermann Zapf, although none of Hermann Zapf´s typefaces could be said to be literal revivals of Giovanbattista Palatino´s letters. Yet many of the characteristics of the Palatino typefaces, such as its open counterforms and overall legibility, are certainly themes that had previously inspired Renaissance lettering. The Palatino typefaces´classical proportions [...]
