Shelley® Script was designed by Matthew Carter and appeared with Mergenthaler Linotype in 1972. It is based on intricate English scripts of the 18th and 19th centuries. The musical terms Andante, Allegro and Volante were chosen by Carter to describe the mood of the three different cuts of his font. Matthew Carter a créé la famille de fontes Shelley en 1972 pour Mergenthaler Linotype pour les machines de photocomposition. L'idée de base était de créer une fonte comportant différentes formes élégantes. Matthew a créé Shelley en trois versions différentes : Allegro qui possède le style de l'écriture manuscrite artistique, Andante dont les majuscules sont moins décoratives et moins larges, et Volante qui possède les formes les plus expressives et les plus larges et un z minuscule doté d'une descendante.
Les trois versions peuvent être associées afin de conférer au texte une apparence calligraphique plus singulière.
La fonte Shelley Linotype Zapfino de Hermann Zapf contient des éléments similaires mais avec une forme totalement différente. Les minuscules des quatre différentes versions de Linotype Zapfino possèdent des formes différentes ce qui permet de conférer au texte une apparence encore plus singulière.
