Karlgeorg Hoefer was born on February 6th, 1914 in Schlesisch-Drehnow. Following schooling in Schlesien and Hamburg, he served a four-year typesetting apprenticeship from 1930-1934 in Hamburg. After two years of military service, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) in Offenbach am Main and then worked in Potsdam. Prof. Karlgeorg Hoefer was one one the most influential calligraphers of the 20th Century. Aside from leading numerous workshops inside the United States, as well as abroad, he taught for decades at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main (Germany). Le maître calligraphe allemand Karlgeorg Hoefer a créé Sho pour la collection Calligraphy for Print de Linotype. Sho est très différente de la plupart des fontes calligraphiques dans la mesure où elle introduit un nouveau style plutôt que de copier un style déjà existant. Les caractères étonnants de Hoefer possèdent des formes généreuses. Il les a créés en utilisant un pinceau large. Cet outil a permis d'obtenir des traits forts et expressifs. Cette fonte devait à l'origine porter le nom de Charlie Chaplin, car en regardant le c minuscule attentivement, on s'aperçoit qu'il ressemble à un homme dormant dans une barque. Cette idée a été abandonnée pour des raisons de droits d'auteur. Le terme Sho a finalement été choisi pour faire référence au style presque japonais des caractères.

D'un point de vue formel, les traits fortement contrastés de Sho la distinguent des autres fontes. Les formes simples et arrondies des caractères constituent une des caractéristiques uniques de Sho en permettant de conférer au texte une apparence énergique et ludique.
