Much has been written about the evolution of type: how the forms of our letters took shape, from the roman capitals to the Carolingian minuscules, and how the Latin alphabet was then, essentially, finalized for eternity by the first printing presses of the Renaissance Age.
Looking back from where we stand now, we could say that the original forms of our uppercase letters are around 2,000 years old, while those of our lowercase letters would be over 1,000 years old. And

Unter dem Einfluss der verschieden Druckverfahren hat die lateinische Textschrift subtile Formveränderungen erfahren. Grundsätzlich neue Formen sind jedoch keine entstanden. Als Demonstration dafür sind acht a in den meistgelesenen Schriftstilen mit einem Drehraster versehen und übereinander kopiert. Das Resultat zeigt eine erstaunliche Übereinstimmung.

Westside can be classified as a "wood type." It is reminiscent of dusty streets, Wild West heroes and swinging saloon doors. The origins of wood types are found in the early nineteenth century, when such types really were cut in wood, and printed on hand presses. Westside has big fat serifs and heavy horizontals that are much thicker than the skinny vertical strokes. When the letters are set together, the heavy serifs build dark horizontal bands. La famille de fontes Univers™ est l'une des plus grandes créations typographiques de la seconde moitié du vingtième siècle. Elle a l'avantage de disposer d'une variété de graisses et de styles qui, même combinés entre eux, procurent une impression de stabilité et d'homogénéité. Grâce à ses formes claires et concrètes, Univers est la fonte idéale pour répondre à toutes les utilisations typographiques. En 1954, la fonderie de caractères Deberny Peignot souhaitait ajouter une police sans empattement, linéaire et possédant plusieurs graisses à la gamme de polices créée pour la machine à composer Lumitype. Adrian Frutiger, directeur artistique de la fonderie, a suggéré de ne pas adapter un alphabet existant mais plutôt de développer une nouvelle police sans empattement permettant de composer des textes plus longs (un défi plutôt excitant pour l'époque). S'appuyant sur les esquisses qu'il avait dessinées lorsqu'il était étudiant à l'école d'arts appliqués de Zurich, il créa la famille de polices Univers. Cette famille fut produite par Deberny Piegnot en 1957 et, par la suite, par Linotype. La bibliothèque typographique Deberny Peignot fut acquise par Haas en 1972 et la bibliothèque Haas fut intégrée à la collection AG/Linotype entre 1985 et 1989. À ce jour, Adrian Frutiger poursuit son travail de création chez Linotype. En 1997, Frutiger et l'équipe de développement de Linotype ont réalisé conjointement un projet consistant à redessiner et mettre à jour la famille Univers. Résultat :
Linotype Univers est disponible en 59 graisses et Linotype Univers Typewriter en 4 graisses. D'allure lisible et solide, la police Univers mélange harmonieusement l'élégance détendue et l'efficacité rationnelle.
