La technologie actuelle de création de polices numériques a enfin permis au créateur et calligraphe de renom Hermann Zapf de concrétiser la vision qu'il a eue il y a plus de 50 ans. Il souhaitait créer une police qui puisse capturer la liberté et la vivacité d'une magnifique écriture manuscrite. La famille Zapfino™ de base, publiée en 1998, se compose de quatre alphabets et de nombreuses versions alternatives pouvant être librement combinées afin d'imiter les variations d'un texte manuscrit.

En 2003, Herman Zapf a totalement remanié son modèle et créé Zapfino™ Extra, une vaste expansion de la famille Zapfino, en étroite collaboration avec Akira Kobayashi.
