Great new text and display families from Hannes von Döhren – Opal, Snoogle, and Snoogle Dingbats

Opal and Snoogle
In August 2008, we introduced Quench®, a contemporary display family by Berlin-based Hannes von Döhren. Since that successful release, Hannes has followed with three more items: Opal™, which is a noble, luxury text face, and Snoogle™ and Snoogle Dingbats, which are contemporary display faces. Opal’s design pays respect to Renaissance serif type, yet Opal is not based on any specific predecessors. The family includes an Italic, Bold, and Script variant (Opal Script is suited for additional text emphasis, or as an alternative to Opal Italic). Snoogle is a friendly, rounded display face with many OpenType ligatures, which almost give the letters the feeling of a script face. A Dingbats font, with hard-core pictograms, complements the design.

Two new fonts from Patricia Roesch-Pothin – Tendria and Saussa

Tendria and Saussa
France’s Patricia Roesch-Pothin brings us two new eye-catching display faces this month as well. Tendria’s letterforms were inspired by the logo for the French “Tendriade” mark; Saussa™ began life as brush-lettered artwork for fruit salad packaging. Patricia began Tendria™ in Adobe® Illustrator®, but after completing a few letters, she went back to designing the old-fashioned way: by hand, with layers of tracing paper as her canvas. Saussa came into the world the other way around; after painting the key letters, Patricia switched to digital tools. Tendria is a sturdy, upright script face with a warm, childlike feeling. Saussa is an informal script whose outstrokes function like serifs; its capitals have a lowercase structure. Tendria is reminiscent of the French word for tender, “tendre.” Saussa, a real advertising face for point-of-purchase displays, sounds a lot like the word “sauce.”

Meet the newest, grumpiest display face from ITC – ITC Bolthole

ITC Bolthole
ITC Bolthole™ is a craggy sans serif typeface with an attitude. Originally designed to complement a whimsical ad for the UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, designer Bernard Philpot recalls that “the ad didn’t win any awards, but the type attracted some very positive comments for its original look and feel.” Whatever emotion strikes you, there is no denying that ITC Bolthole has a personality to be reckoned with, as well as ample magnetism to attract reader attraction. If used to set brief blocks of display copy, the typeface makes a powerful statement.
