Linotype International Type Design Contest 2003 by Markus Hanzer – March, 2004

A question is often raised in connection with the International Type Design Contest: What do we need new type designs for anyway?

Ever since my childhood, I’ve had a special affinity for fonts. Maybe it’s because I can appreciate them in peace and quiet and they never seemed to get tired of me. I can admire them, smile at them, be astonished by them or look down on them. They always fill me with pleasure and give me orientation. Fonts tell me about former times, past efforts and sometimes futile pursuits – and they show off: with an endless variety of characters and expressive forms.
