| Libro | trytype – experiments in typography | ![]() |
| Descripción | A cooperative project between Linotype GmbH, Bad Homburg and the University of Applied Sciences, Wiesbaden. For two semesters under the leadership of Prof. Guido Ludes and Stefanie Weber, Certified Designer, students at the University of Applied Sciences, Wiesbaden experimented with selected typefaces from Linotype. The results of this typographical research are presented in trytype, ranging from linear black-and-white graphics all the way up to complex, three dimensonal font universes, literary interpretations and freehand illustrations. Examples of the didactic steps that led to the creation of the various works are shown and explained in sketches. Not only does this unique combination make trytype a rich source of inspiration, inviting us to view and discover typography in a new light, the book should also be understood as an encouragement to work with characters and typographic systems in ways fully independent of readability. 152 pages, 23,5 x 27,5 cm, Hardcover with blind embossed and dust jacket. | Producto | Magazine “Linotype Matrix” | ![]() |
| Descripción | New Linotype Matrix is now available! Linotype Matrix is a typographical journal, published from time to time by Linotype. The Linotype Matrix was a quarterly newssheet produced by Linotype and Machinery Ltc. From the 1930s through the 1960s. The publication carried information about Linotype products, and the printing trade, but also included several articles on type and typography. As such, it was a platform were new types were portrayed, and the journal often followed up with success stories of Linotype originals. Almost 50 years after the last issue, volume 4 of the Linotype Matrix returns, this time in magazine format. Rich in content and graphics, the new look takes into consideration the reading habits and design trends of today. But the purpose is still the same: to showcase the hidden gems of the Linotype Library, and to provide a platform for design discourse and typographic expression. 4 color print. | Libro | Schriftanalysen — Untersuchungen zur Geschichte typographischer Schriften(German) by Max Caflisch | ![]() |
| Descripción | Gutenberg’s invention of printing with movable type marked the beginning of the mass-communication era. Since then, little in the world of design has remained unchanged. But one constant may be traced from the Renaissance into the age of digital printing: just as in Gutenberg’s time, there is a need for legible typefaces today. The physical nature of the human eye remains the same; when the laws of legibility are broken, the reader’s unconscious typographic sense rushes for the barricades – illegible text is discarded as unread rubbish. Max Caflisch (1916–2004), one of the 20th Century’s most respected typographers, collected over 40 articles concerning type design trends and advances from 1470 through the present into one two-volume edition. Readers of this well-illustrated investigation will discover just why some typefaces have been able to spread across geographical and cultural borders, while others were doomed to achieve only fleeting fame before sinking into historical obscurity. The first volume covers Nicholas Jenson’s old style typefaces (c. 1470) through John Bell’s transitional work (late 1700s). Alongside these classic faces, Caflisch discusses 20th century historical revivals. The second volume discusses grotesk and slab serif typefaces, as well as the development of special types for newspaper text. Additionally, the book chronicles the type design work of Eric Gill, Oldrich Menhart, Chris Brand, and Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. |
