Auriol

Font Designer: Georges Auriol

Georges Auriol (born Jean Georges Huyot) was a French graphic artist whose work exemplifies the art nouveau style practiced in Paris in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

In 1900 Georges Peignot asked Auriol to design fonts for PEIGNOT & SONS, the result was the font Auriol®. Auriol, with its distinctive ’M’, was the basis for the lettering used by Hector Guimard for the entrance signs to the Paris Metro. It was re-released by Deberny & Peignot in 1979 with a new bold (by Matthew Carter). Georges Auriol also designed a series of typographic ornaments, Auriol Flowers.
