Linotype Cethubala

Font Designer: Patricia Carvalho, 1997

Patricia Carvalho about Linotype Cethubala™:
"The Cethubala typeface was created to supress the lack of meaning that other fonts had toward a specific work. The font had to carry itself a feeling a religiousness, even being a pagan one. This typeface was ment to accompany a ritual as a verbal/iconic interpretation of the event. So it was named after the old city’s name – Cethubala (the legendary name for Setubal, a portuguese city – carries within itself a sense of magic, and adds a meaningful value to the event with actual and real words. You can sense in it the underlying features of the runes and of old alphabets, the first produced by mankind – an attempt to interpret and carry the knowlege of the magic world.
Cethubala was part of a project called "The Celebration of Cethubala".
The purpose of the "Celebration of Cethubala" is to rise some questions about the significance of a place, the place where we live and where others have lived. It implies the notion of distance through time and space, a travel to an alternate epoch in which we can pay homage to the symbol itself. Its a gathering a symbols, in a ritual-like, pagan-procession to celebrate Tubal, our great ancestor (Noah’s grandson which chose Setubal to live, a city in the western coast of Portugal, near the sea). After the Big Flood, Noah with his sons and grandsons departed in wooden arks to find dry land. Cethubala was found by Tubal and became his kingdom. And this is a celebration of that man and his people since the first moment (the waters), through the last, telling the story of a city which knew many man and women who did matter to this city’s history.
How the typeface came to form:
Many old alphabeth were studied manly in its structure and form to create an old/ritual-like font as Cethubala. The font was structured from a diamond divided on 4 simetric parts. Inside, several circles divided the space as well as diagonal lines. Some effects were achieved combining these forms – like the letter "R", and others were created based on other letters from old alphabeths – like the letter "E"."
Let the outstanding quality of this typeface convince you.
