Hermann Zapf is renowned the world over as a master calligrapher and type designer. Throughout his tremendous life, he has contributed volumes to the history of typography. His oeuvre encompasses text faces, symbol fonts, and even script designs, such as the new classic Zapfino. Die Entwürfe zur Aurelia von Hermann Zapf orientieren sich an den Formen der Jenson, der venezianischen Renaissance-Antiqua die Nicolas Jenson 1470 in Venedig verwendete und die bis zur heutigen Zeit einen großen Einfluß auf die Schriftentwicklung hatte. Zapf verfeinerte sie, versah sie mit seinem persönlichen Stil und paßte sie den modernen Anforderungen, die durch neue Techniken an Schriften gestellt werden, an. So schuf er zum Beispiel eine normale Version für gestrichene Papiere und eine leichtere für rauhe Papiere.
Das kräftige, robuste und klassische Schriftbild der Aurelia eignet sich gleichermaßen für Text-und Headlinesatz.
