Die Atlantis gehört zur Gruppe der europäischen Groteskschriften. Im Vergleich zu den amerikanischen Groteskschriften, die sich stärker an der Antiqua orientierten, besaßen die in Europa entwickelten Serifenlosen meist streng konstruierte Grundformen.
Auch die Buchstaben der Atlantis basieren auf den geometrischen Formen von Kreis, Quadrat und Rechteck. Das a ist einstöckig gestaltet und das g verfügt über eine offene Unterlänge, was ebenfalls Charakteristikum der europäischen Groteskschriften ist.
Die Atlantis hat annähernd gleiche Strichstärken. Diese sind optisch so ausgeglichen, daß das Auge sie als gleichstark empfindet. Nur die Brückenstriche, Bogeneinläufe in den Senkrechten und die Rundformen weisen leichte Verjüngungen auf.
Das klar und kühl anmutende Schriftbild der Atlantis eignet sich gleichermaßen für Lauftexte und Überschriften. Ähnliche Schriften sind zum Beispiel die Futura von Paul Renner und die Gill von Eric Gill.
