Die ersten Skizzen für die Bobotta Icons fertigte der deutsche Schriftentwerfer Roberto Mannella 1999 in einem Urlaub an. Etwas später machte er daraus einen vollständigen Symbol-Font, der anlässlich des internationalen Schriftdesign-Wettbewerbs 2003, der von der Linotype GmbH gesponsert wurde, eine ehrenhafte Erwähnung erhielt.
