1510: trains as a punch cutter with Simon de Colines in Paris. 1520: trains with Geoffroy Tory. 1530: Garamond’s first type is used in an edition of the book "Paraphrasis in Elegantiarum Libros Laurentii Vallae" by Erasmus. Die allgemeinen historischen Wurzeln der Garamond können unter dem Beschreibungsnamen"GaramondNr.5" nachgelesen werden.
Die ITC Garamond ist so stark verändert, daß nur noch wenige Bezüge zu ihrem namentlichen Vorbild bestehen. Ober-und Unterlänge sind verkürzt, die Mittellänge erhöht worden. Die von Tony Stan vorgenommenen Veränderungen beziehen sich im wesentichen auf ein vollkommen neu konzipertes Kleinbuchstabenalphabet in allen Schnitten. Diese wurden so konzipiert, daß sie in ihrem Verhältnis der erhöhten Mittellänge zur Weite nicht mehr zu den Großbuchstaben passen, wenn man den klassischen Parameter des Schriftenaufbaus zugrunde legt. Aber gerade diese Maßnahme, die die Lesbarkeit verbesserte war es, welche die ITC Garamond zu einer der populären Schriften werden ließ, die besonders in Anzeigen und im Bereich der Bedienermanuals oder Benutzerhandbücher anzutreffen ist.
