David Siegel in Palo Alto had the original idea of using the calligraphic work of Hermann Zapf created in 1944 as the basis for a calligraphic script in order to try out a new type of system for typesetting on the PC. Zapf himself was unable to achieve such an authentic script himself given the technical restrictions of hot metal composition. It nevertheless remained his dream for many years.

Die Zapfino™ Extra ist eine OpenType-Schriftart, die in zwei Versionen vorliegt. Die so genannte Contexual Version enthält eine große Auswahl von kontextuellen Funktionen. Bei ihrer Veröffentlichung im Jahr 2004 war sie der bis dato fortschrittlichste OpenType-Font. Mit dem Kauf der Contextual Version bekommen Benutzer von Anwendungen wie Adobe InDesign, die OpenType unterstützen, über die beiden Fonts
Zapfino Extra LT Pro (Contextual) und
Zapfino Forte LT Pro Zugriff auf die gesamte Zapfino-Familie.
Leider bieten die meisten Anwendungen, die nicht von Adobe stammen, keine Unterstützung der kontextuellen Funktionen, die durch die kürzlichen OpenType-Entwicklungen bereitgestellt werden. Das heißt, dass Benutzer von QuarkXPress und Microsoft Office die nicht kontextuellen Fonts der Zapfino Extra Pro-Schriftfamilie kaufen sollten, um auf die 1676 Glyphen der Zapfino-Schriftfamilie zugreifen zu können.
Die Zeichensätze der Zapfino-Familie unterstützen 48 westliche und „Central European“ Sprachen.

Die moderne digitale Font-Technologie hat es dem renommierten Schriftdesigner und -künstler Hermann Zapf erlaubt, einen Traum zu verwirklichen, den er vor über 50 Jahren hatte: eine Druckschrift zu kreieren, die der Ungebundenheit und Lebhaftigkeit einer schönen Handschrift möglichst nahe kommt.
