1966: studies at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Takes calligraphy lessons with Lloyd Reynolds. Then works as a type designer for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for two years. 1972: opens his type studio, Alpha and Omega Press, in Sonoma, California. The American designer Holly Goldsmith created the fonts ITC Bodoni™ Six, ITC Bodoni™ Twelve and ITC Bodoni™ Seventy Two in 1994 (with Janice Fishman, Jim Parkinson and Sumner Stone). A further typeface of her is ITC Vintage™, created in 1996.

Jim Parkinson is principal of Parkinson Type Design, specializing in design of typefaces and typographic logos, including those for Newsweek, Rolling Stone, the San Francisco Examiner, The Atlanta Journal, Parenting, and (in collaboration with Roger Black and Ann Pomeroy) Esquire. He has drawn display typefaces for Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, and the San Francisco Chronicle, and was one of the designers of ITC Bodoni.
