Hermann Zapf is renowned the world over as a master calligrapher and type designer. Throughout his tremendous life, he has contributed volumes to the history of typography. Die Aldus wurde von Hermann Zapf entworfen und erschien 1954 bei der Schriftgießerei D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main. Zapf benannte diese Schrift nach dem berühmten venezianischen Schreibmeister und Frühdrucker Aldus Manutius, dessen Druckwerke zu den bedeutendsten der Renaissanceepoche gehören. Eine besondere Charakteristika im Werk des Aldus Manutius ist die sogenannte spitzzulaufende Satzkolumne, wie sie in der 1499 in Venedig herausgegebenen "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" des Francesco Colonna zu sehen ist. Dieser Stil war für Hermann Zapf das unmittelbare Vorbild für die Aldus. Mit dieser Schrifttype lassen sich deshalb Texte mit der ganzen Anmut und Eleganz, wie sie für die Renaissancezeit typisch sind, reproduzieren. Die Linotype Aldus wurde für den Werksatz als leichterer Schnitt der Palatino herausgegeben. Daher weist sie auch dieselben Besonderheiten wie diese auf. Das Ziel Hermann Zapfs war es mit seiner Palatino und der ergänzenden Buchschrift Aldus eine neue Form der Renaissance-Antiqua zu schaffen. Beide Schriften weisen ungewohnte, teils exaltierte Besonderheiten auf. Zu nennen wären hier die am mittleren Querstrich fehlenden Serifen beim versalen F und E oder der hochliegende Querstrich des versalen A gegenüber dem tiefliegenden beim F.
