Type communicates both image and information. It’s impossible for a company to do without it. Any company with high quality products and services naturally needs the highest quality typefaces for their communications. And certainly everything has its price. Even the fonts that come with operating systems are not free of charge; they are included in the price of the entire product.

Fonts are software. They are copyrighted and can only be used according to the terms of the licence agreement. This also applies for fonts that come with operating systems. The basic licence usually includes the use of the fonts on up to five computers. They may also be installed on laptops and home computers as long as no more than five computers can use the fonts at the same time.

If a company needs simultaneous access to the fonts on more than five computers or if the fonts need to be available at remote branches, Linotype offers individual multiple user licenses. These can of course be extended one workstation at any time so that fees are only paid for the actual use.

The digital transfer of documents can make it necessary to obtain licences for third parties by external designers for example, or when sending files to printers or repro houses. An option for the latter is to embed the fonts in the document to be transferred. The embedding of fonts in Post-Script or Acrobat documents is secure because these formats do not allow a third party to extract and use the fonts without a license. This is especially important when your fonts have been custom-made or you use an exclusive font.
