Font Designer: Matthew Carter, 1972 Shelley® Script was designed by Matthew Carter and appeared with Mergenthaler Linotype in 1972. It is based on intricate English scripts of the 18th and 19th centuries. The musical terms Andante, Allegro and Volante were chosen by Carter to describe the mood of the three different cuts of his font. Matthew Carter entwarf die Shelley Schriftfamilie 1972 für Mergenthaler Linotype zum Einsatz als neue Schreibschrift auf den Fotosatzmaschinen. Es sollte eine Schreibschrift mit verschiedenen eleganten Buchstabenformen geschaffen werden. Also entwarf Matthew drei unterschiedliche Versionen: Allegro nach dem Vorbild der Kuenstler Schreibschrift, Andante mit weniger reich verzierten und weniger breiten Versalien und Volante mit sehr expressiven, breiten Buchstaben sowie einem z mit Unterlänge.
Diese drei Versionen lassen sich beliebig kombinieren, wenn eine individuellere Kalligrafie gewünscht wird.
Ein ähnliches Prinzip verfolgt die Linotype Zapfino von Hermann Zapf, wenn auch ihre Buchstaben komplett anders aussehen. In der Linotpye Zapfino besitzen die einzelnen Minuskeln der vier verschiedenen Versionen unterschiedliche Formen, so dass das Schriftbild noch stärker individuell gestaltet werden kann.
