Carol Twombly – born 13. 6. 1959 in Concord, USA – type designer. Studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Stanford University. 1984: is awarded 1st prize in the Morisawa type competition in Japan for he Mirarae typeface. 1988: joins Adobe and designs Adobe’s first original display typefaces (Trajan, Charlemagne and Lithos). In designing Trajan™ font, Carol Twombly was influenced by the style of the chiseled writings of the Romans during the first century AD. Twombly completed the font with numerals and punctuation and added a bolder version for text which should be emphasized. Most importantly, her interpretation of an ancient style resulted in a font whose clarity and beauty come across in modern printed materials.

Als Vorbild für die Trajan dienten Carol Twombly die Letterformen der Capitalis Monumentalis, eine der römischen Meißelschriften, die im ersten Jahrhundert n. Chr. in Proportion und Schönheit ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. Diese Schrift, die nur aus Großbuchstaben besteht, wurde von den Römern hauptsächlich zur Beschriftung repräsentativer Bauten und Denkmäler verwendet, beispielsweise am Trajanbogen im Forum Romanum in Rom.
Twombly veränderte diese historische Vorlage in Form der Trajan so, daß sie auch gedruckt auf Papier ihre volle Schönheit entfalten kann. Um die Schrift zu vervollständigen wurden Ziffern und Satzzeichen und eine kräftigere Version als Auszeichnungsalphabet hinzugefügt .
Als Headlineschrift,18 Punkt und größer angewendet, wirkt die Trajan klassisch schön und repräsentativ.
