Die Snell Roundhand Script, die 1965 erschien, wurde von Matthew Carter gestaltet. Bei der Konzeption und Gestaltung orientierte sich Matthew Carter am historischen Vorbild der Schreibschrift round hand, nach der er auch den Namen wählte, aus der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Schrift round hand wurde ihrerzeit von der niederländischen Typografie inspiriert. Diese niederländische Form ist jedoch selbst nur eine Variante der französischen bastarde coule. Ihr englischer Zweig round hand zeichnet sich nach G. Bickham, einem berühmten Kalligraphen des 18. Jahrhunderts, in erster Linie durch die breitere und sehr runde Zeichnung , der stärkeren Rechtsneigung und dem ausgeprägterem Strichstärkenkontrast aus. Die Snell Roundhand Script hat eine sehr elegante und festliche Anmutung. Sie eignet sich für mittellange Texte und Überschriften. Ihre Versalien können als Initial vorteilhaft mit anderen Alphabeten, zum Beispiel den Druckschriften des Barock, gemischt werden.
