The renowned British designer Matthew Carter has worked as a type designer for over 40 years. His designs are suitable for an astonishing array of applications; many of them are already world-famous and the recipients of countless awards. Der Clarendon-Ionic-Formentypus, der die klassizistischen Zeitungsschriften ablöste, wurde wiederum durch einen neuen verdrängt. Diese neue Generation von Zeitungsschriften, zu der die Olympian schon gehört, besteht aus einer innovativen Mischung von Elementen der Renaissance-, Barock- und klassizistischen Antiqua. Begünstigt wurde dieser Trend wesentlich durch die weltweite Umrüstung zum Fotosatz und Offsetdruck, was eine größere Formenvielfalt zuließ, die selbst vor den konservativen Zeitungsschriften nicht halt machte. Die optische Qualität einer Type konnte nun besser wiedergegeben werden. Die Olympian enthält mehrheitlich Stilmerkmale der Renaissance-Antiqua.
