Will Carter – born 24. 9. 1912 in Slough near London, England, died 17. 3. 2001 – type designer, printer. 1930–32: trains at the Unwin Brothers printing works in Woking. 1938: works at the Paul Koch workshop in Frankfurt am Main; becomes friends with Hermann Zapf. 1948: studies punch cutting with David Kindersley. 1949: founds the Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge. David Kindersley (born 11. 6. 1915 in Codicote, died 2. 2. 1995 in Cambridge) and Will Carter designed the font Octavian™ in 1962. Mr. Carter writes: "While the ultimate authority is the ancient inscriptional pattern, the physical characteristics of the present rendering are manifest in the economic proportions of the shapes and the modified relations of the strokes. Thus, the letters are narrower than the classical forms and their weight heavier.” Octavian is a fine book face and works well [...]

Die Octavian wurde 1961 von Will Carter und David Kindersley für die Monotype Corporation gestaltet.
Mr. Carter schreibt dazu: "Während die letzte Autorität die antiken Buchstabenformen sind, so zeigen sich die physischen Merkmale dieser Neuauslegung in den ökonomischen Proportionen der Formen und den modifizierten Beziehungen der Striche untereinander. Deshalb sind die Buchstaben schmaler als ihre klassischen Vorbilder und ihre Gewichte schwerer."
Die Octavian ist eine gediegene Schrift für Bücher, aber auch für andere, weniger anspruchsvolle Anwendungen, etwa Zeitschriften und Broschüren.
