Linotype Zapfino is a complex font that can be used on the computer for creating calligraphic script layout designs. Its introduction into the market has had an auspicious start and the Type Directors Club of New York has just presented Linotype Zapfino with the prestigious TDC Type Design Award.

And like with Zapfs typeface Noris Script™ he wanted to preserve the rough outline of the handwritten form in the final drawings. Durch die heutige digitale Fonttechnologie konnte der Traum des berühmten Schriftkünstlers Hermann Zapf nach über 50 Jahren endlich Wirklichkeit werden: eine schwungvolle kalligrafische Schreibschrift zu gestalten, die vielen Benutzern in Form eines digitalen Fonts zur Verfügung steht. Zapf begann seine Arbeit an der Zapfino 1993 in technischer Zusammenarbeit mit David Siegel und Gino Lee, der die Digitalisierung der Vorlagen und Zeichnungen übernahm. Die Linotype Library sorgte für die technische Umsetzung der ungewöhnlichen Alphabete. Sie erstellte und veröffentlichte die ersten PostScript- und TrueType-Versionen der Zapfino als Set von sechs Fonts. Die gegenwärtige Zapfino "megafont" für Apple Advanced Typography (AAT) und Open Type wurde für die Linotype Library von Tiro Typeworks erstellt. Diese neue Version beinhaltet zusätzlich Schriftzeichen für die lateinische Schriftsprache Zentral- und Osteuropas, die baltischen Staaten und die Türkei. Die insgesamt vier Alphabete der Zapfino, sowie ihr Sonderzeichen- und ihr Ligaturenfont umfassen einen Zeichenvorrat, der weit über den Standard hinausgeht. Die Alphabete beinhalten mehrere Varianten aller Kleinbuchstaben, Ligaturen, besondere Schwungbuchstaben und eine Vielzahl von Ornamenten. Durch die geschickte Mischung der Alphabete kann die Anmutung einer individuellen kalligrafischen Handschrift erweckt werden. Allerdings ist der Satz nicht ganz einfach. Er erfordert das geschulte Auge des Benutzers und einen sorgfältigen Umgang.
