Font Designer – Peter Behrens

Born 14 April 1868 in Hamburg, died 27 February 1940 in Berlin. Architect, painter and graphic artist. Studied from 1886 to 1891 at the academies in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf. Appointed painter and designer to Darmstadt Artists’ Colony (Künstlerkolonie), 1891 - 1899. Director of the School of Commercial Arts, Düsseldorf, 1903 – 1907. From 1907, member of the Artistic Advisory Board of AEG Berlin. A founder member of the German Association of Craftsmen (Deutscher Werkbund) in 1913. From 1922, Professor and Director of the Master School of Architecture at the Vienna Academy of Arts. Member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1936 (as successor to Hans Poelzig).
Peter Behrend also worked as a font designer for the Klingspor type foundry, where he created Behrens Antiqua and Behrens Schrift in 1901.
