Font Designer – Denyse Schmidt

Denyse Schmidt is a dancer and artist with a wide and varied background. In her own words – “A couple of years ago I went and got a design education. Before that I worked in film, dance and performance in a variety of capacities … I’ve always enjoyed drawing letters, but learning to cut letters in stone with John Hegenauer really inspired me. He made typography seem less mysterious and imposing. My friend Tobias Frere-Jones encouraged me to design Scamp while we were at school … I think it looks best at small quantities at large sizes, and knocked out of bright colors (as if cut out of paper, which is how it started). I have more ideas for type, mostly inspired by my work the last few years designing children’s books. These days I’m designing and producing modern quilts.”
