Documents referring to this product ...

As the name implies, Linotype Syntax™ Serif is an addition to Hans Eduard Meier's famous Syntax type family. The original concept behind Syntax was to develop a typeface that merged the grace of a Renaissance roman with the structural characteristics of a sans serif. Meier began the design in 1954 and in 1968 it was released by the typefoundry D. Stempel AG in hotmetal with three weights: Light, Semibold, and Extra Bold. In 1995, Hans Eduard Meier began working with Linotype to [...]

June 2006: “Apostrophes and Quotation Marks” Which glyph is correct: the inch, the acute, or the apostrophe? – This feature describes the poper use of the pesky punctuation mark that signifies omission and forms the possessive (and sometimes plurals). Apostrophes Prime symbol, used here to incorrectly create the [...]
The sans serif typeface Syntax™ was designed by Switzerland’s Hans Eduard Meier, based on the proportions of a Renaissance roman type. It went into use in 1968 as the last hot-metal typeface from the D. Stempel type foundry. And has remained a classic through a variety of technical changes and adaptations. In collaboration with its creator, a gentle overhaul of the typeface was begun in 1995. Ultimately, after maintaining a manageable size for 20 years with semi-bold, bold and italic, the [...]

About Linotype Syntax® Light Italic ...

Linotype usage sample for Linotype Syntax® Com Light Italic
Designer: Hans Eduard Meier, 2000
Linotype Syntax® Light Italic belongs to the Linotype Syntax® Font Family which is part of the Platinum Collection.
Swiss type designer Hans Eduard Meier and Linotype began a collaboration in 1995 to produce an extensive revision and expansion of Meier's popular Syntax™ font family. The drawings Meier had done half a century earlier for the original font provided the philosophical direction for the revision. Shape alterations that had formerly been necessary for hot metal and photo-typesetting machines were discarded. Several new weights from Light to Black were added - including Old style Figures, special x-height figures, small caps, and italics. Design details were made consistent throughout all the weights, and graceful new characters were added. Despite its solid foundation in Renaissance letterforms, Meier's unusual approach of interpreting these forms as a monoline sans serif typeface caused the stodgier typographers to raise their eyebrows when Syntax was first released in 1968. Today, Syntax has the distinction of being not only a recognized modern classic, but also a consistent bestseller. Linotype Syntax™ was released in 2000 and is part of the , a series created to serve the needs of professionals by providing the highest quality typographic solutions. With its enduring vitality and legible bearing, Syntax is a ready communicator in corporate design, graphic design, and publishing applications.
