TypoTechnica 2007

Linotype’s TypoTechnica 2007 conference took place from April 27–29 at the Gutenberg-Schule in Frankfurt. The weather was quite warm, and very sunny. About 120 font technicians, type designers, journalists, and students were in attendance.

The conference’s talks all revolved around themes having to do with font production and language support, as well as how OpenType features and font files themselves are handled in various applications and operating systems.

Frank Wildenberg, Linotype’s Managing Director, began the conference with a short introduction and welcoming speech.

The conference’s keynote speaker was Christian Schwartz, the type designer from New York. The theme of his presentation was “We’re halfway there; Type in the real world.” The talk dealt with the relationships between a type designer and his clients, as well as what OpenType can and cannot offer them.

Aside from the main track, there were a series of talks held in the school’s PC and Mac labs. Above, FontLab’s Adam Twardoch leads a session in the PC Lab.

The Gutenberg-Schule offered the perfect atmosphere for the conference’s activities. Above is another shot of the school’s main hall.
