Type from A–Z – June 2, 2006

Linotype at TYPO Berlin 2006

Bad Homburg, 2nd June 2006. Linotype once again joined the leading forces in graphics and typography at Europe’s most important communication design conference. In its 11th year, TYPO Berlin has built a reputation as the place where the design trends of tomorrow are not only envisioned but also forged. The theme of this year’s TYPO was “play” – challenging the often neglected interchange between technology and emotion. Linotype presented product novelties and the latest version of FontExplorer™ X, their revolutionary new tool with “plenty of goodies up its sleeve.”

TYPO Berlin 2006 delivered a program of refreshing ideas. With topics pushing the boundaries of the print world and reenergizing its influence in today’s culture, TYPO annually brings together cutting edge designers and controversial thinkers. This year’s speakers, including Linotype’s Tobias Meyerhoff, explored the human side of design communication and dis-cussed how to reassert the playful, emotive, and individual, in today´s business world.

Linotype presented the new OpenType collections – with over 2,505 OpenType fonts, it is the largest collection currently available in OpenType format. These collections offer a wide range – from classic favorites to new, freewheeling fonts; not just from Linotype, but also a wide variety of fonts from other foundries as well. Visitors at the stand could also find out more about Linotype’s classification for OpenType fonts – Std, Pro, and Com – catering to the needs of users with global communication needs.

Another source of inspiration was the opportunity to flip through and buy the new "Typeface Catalog A–Z from Linotype". This surprisingly easy-to-use, 600 page book incorporates all typefaces available from Linotype. In the margins, it is clearly indicated which fonts are available in OpenType as well as which formats and alphabets are supported respectively. This makes the catalog an ideal companion for all those who communicate inter-nationally. A thumb index makes it easy to find the way through the seven sections. And the large point size allows for close investigation of each typeface design and even its minutest details.

The latest version of FontExplorer X 1.0 was also much appreciated. Ever since the first official release the tool has been tested and steadily improved and - with its iTunes-like ease-of-functionality - offers communication architects unrivalled power in font management and -licensing. Users had been waiting for an intuitive and adaptable Mac OS X tool like this for quite some time. A talk from Tobias Meyerhoff named “Play - with Linotype FontExplorer X” opened a stimulating and interesting view on the product philosophy. Mac OS X users can download the latest version of this exciting font management tool for absolutely no charge from the Linotype website at www.fontexplorer.com.

As always, visiting the Linotype stand provided a great opportunity to get in touch, ask questions, get feedback and take part in discussions on cutting edge trends in font technology and design.
